Herman Tob

Herman Tob (in memoriam 1936 - 2011) was a chairman and managing director of several companies and has himself undergone a liver transplant. In 1976, he was diagnosed as having evolutive cirrhosis due to "non-A non-B" viral hepatitis, which since 1990 has been referred to as hepatitis C. To express his thanks and to contribute to the work on hepatitis, in 1992 he set up the Euroliver Foundation with Professor Jean-Bernard Otte of the Saint-Luc University Clinics.

Herman Tob saw this support initiative as a means of boosting basic research, with particular emphasis on the need for a program of research into the immunology of transplants and xenografts to make up for the lack of donor organs and the need for psychological accompaniment to patients before and after the transplant. He was also a supporter for the advance of living donor organ transplatation.

Herman Tob left us in 2011. During the 20 years that followed his transplantation he continued to engage in business, cultural and scientic activities. He was the father of two and the grandfather of four. The Euroliver Foundation under the generous initiative of Prof. Jean-Bernard Otte and Prof. Jan Lerut, and with support of Saint-Luc University Clinics,  dedicated the Donor Memorial to him. The speaches delivered during the ceremonies are presented on these pages.
